'In' at Cafeteria Review

The Art World was overflowing with activities all this week. Art aficionados converged on the Miami area to experience the Art Basel Week. Art of all kinds was on display throughout our Miami and Miami Beach communities… exposing the appreciative audience to a broad spectrum created by artists worldwide.

Miami Beach’s Lincoln Road was teeming with a populace hungry to experience art at its finest. And… it appears no one has been disappointed. I know I wasn’t.

One of this week’s hottest parties was hosting a special form of art. The art of music. I experienced the art of music at Cafeteria. The “IN” parties hosted by Biz Martinez, David Orth, Karin Martos and Jason Gaeten have been graciously welcomed as artistic events for true music aficionados.

Being “IN” at Cafeteria means so much to so many. Being “IN” means enjoying our local DJ’s. Rocky Castro, Shawn Rudnick, Alex Villalobos, Oscar G and Roland all contribute to the “IN” art form.

Cafeteria once again hosted another birthday bash. Orange balloons virtually covered the entire ceiling in honor of the “birthday boy” Diego. Classic board games such as “Connect Four” were placed throughout the lounge as was the popular mini arcade setup.

I arrived at Cafeteria early… and with a particular objective in mind…. I wanted to better know the resident DJ Rocky Castro. After grabbing my Vodka Tonic at the bar, Rocky and I discussed his influences in the music industry.

Rocky, who began his djing career at the age 20, was beckoned to his calling by two local residencies… George Acosta at Shadow Lounge and Oscar G at Liquid. Rocky explained that these DJ’s, as well as Roland, inspired him greatly and helped shape his career path thus far.

Wednesday night quickly became Thursday morning as the crowd grew larger and larger in anticipation of Roland’s guest appearance. It was packed!

Rocky treated us to a broad assortment of soulful house and old school. Madonna. Michael Jackson. The crowd was treated to the artistic renditions of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” Moloko’s “Sing It Back,” and Kings of Tomorrow’s “Time Marches On.”

The magic started by Rocky was intensified as Roland assumed the decks. Roland’s artistic flair took us back in time to the days of the old Space patio. Madonna’s “Holiday,” Manijama’s “No No No,” and Ron Carroll’s “The Sermon,” easily flowed from his artistic palette.

As Roland took a well deserved break, Rocky treated the crowd with some old school hip-hop.

As day approached, the crowd continued to show their appreciation by singing and dancing up a storm. One gentleman even decided to attach some balloons to his shoulder and dance around for his friends in front of the V.I.P. booths.

Our very own CoolJunkie members Claudia and Michelle were singing and “shaking their booties”,” as, in the background, Terror Squad’s “Lean Back” reverberated throughout the room.

Cafeteria Resident Rocky Castro, together with Roland, delivered an energetic tag team set.

As the evening came to a close, my group had worked up quite an appetite from all our dancing, and a few of us decided to enjoy a tasty breakfast (at 3:30 am no less). I was able to enjoy a delicious omelet amongst a circle of good friends, the self-proclaimed “Breakfast Club.”

Because of the intimacy of the “IN” party at Cafeteria coupled with sets that range from all forms of house to hip-hop, Wednesday nights are no longer just another work-night, but rather an evening to celebrate great music and friends.

So are you “IN”?
