The Rok Bar opening

Miami Beach's Rok Bar is one venue that had become more famous for its not opening than it's actual opening.

After several false starts the bar finally opened last Thursday night. Located right next to Mynt on 19th and Collins the bar is in prime location for the celebrities and glitterati who frequent that area.

As usual there was some door drama but finally we were inside. The place was packed with an upbeat, beautiful crowd and girls were already dancing on the seating.

The room is a fair size with a bar running down one side. Above the bar hang huge black and white photographs of yes you guessed it, rock stars performing.

Another unique feature are the circular plasic lights on the ceiling. Apparently they rotate and change colour according to one reveller.

At the back of the room is an elevated DJ booth well above the crowd. It is basically another room with an open wall and is accessible via a step ladder. I feel sorry for the poor DJs navigating that with boxes of records. But since this is the Rok bar perhaps they use CD's.

The music was a refreshing alternative to electronic music, don't get me wrong I adore dance music, it's just that sometimes change is good. And it is kinda fun to dance around to songs you know once in a while.

So all the usual South Beach suspects were in the house, with Street and Ocean Drive photographers and writers as well, and a guest appearance by our very own writer Cubby.

The atmosphere was great. People were actually nice when they banged into you - how is that for Rock and Roll.

We didn't stay too long but no doubt there were a few celebrities lurking in the house espcially as one of the owners is Tommy Lee.

All in all it's a really cool venue, kind of a glossed up Automatic Slims.
