Anyone who has ever eaten a large dollop of Wasabi, (most likely by accident the first time, or out of stupidity the next) knows that you need only a little to spice up your food.
It is the same at Wasabi Tuesdays at Sushi Samba. A small amount of energy and karaoke goes along way to creating a fun party.
When I arrived at the restaurant at 10pm, the outside tables were filled with dinners enjoying the balmy Miami night and Sushi Samba's delectable cuisine.
Seated at our table, we proceeded to enjoy the variety on the menu for dinner. Not only sushi and sashimi, there are some grilled fish dishes for those wanting something more substantial. The menu is a fusion of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian cuisine, which give the place a unique feel.
My meal of tuna tartar starter and grilled sea bass main course, were beautifully presented and very tasty. The staff were also very attentive and friendly.
For the celeb spotters out there Matt Damon and his girlfriend dined there the previous week during the Brazilian Carnival festivities.
About 11.30pm the place filled up and host Rocco got on the mike warming up the crowd.
Whilst some singers sipped cocktails for dutch courage, others seemed seasoned pros. Their renditions of songs were very pleasant to the ear and not the usual screeching you can get in some karaoke places.
One local, Jose, wearing a black suit and trilby, proceeded to entertain the crowd with a couple of excellent Frank Sinatra numbers. Then there was the cute couple of girls from England who blasted out 'It's raining men', to the delight of the men in the house.
Host Rocco's, energetic jumping around the chairs and tables and renditions of some hot rock numbers also had people getting into the vibe.
The crowd was a South Beach crowd, with lots of models and familiar faces, so much so that the whole effect was part Gap ad/part-Diesel ad, in a restaurant setting.
In fact it reminded me of a glammed and grown up version of Home Cookin, the once popular Tuesday night party at GrooveJet.
Even Shelly Novac was there, unleashing her dulcet tones with some fine song renditions.
Promoter Mykel Stevens was in the house, making sure everyone was having a great time. Along with Carmel Ophir, Mykel is also responsible for the long standing Back Door Bamby party at Crobar on Monday nights.
All in all a great party, so check it out. For dinner reservations call: 305-673-5337
